Development along the Balaton shore is proceeding at an increasing pace, and now a particularly sensitive section near Fonyód has also come under threat. Due to the planned construction of a four-story residential building, researchers at the Limnological Research Institute have spoken out sharply: the lake is already at the limit of its carrying capacity, so every new shoreline investment is ecologically irresponsible.

The experts have turned to the Constitutional Court, as they believe current decisions could determine the ecological state of Balaton for decades. The disappearance of natural habitats directly threatens water quality and biodiversity, weakening the entire ecosystem of the lake. The researchers emphasize that preserving existing natural conditions is no longer enough; restoring previous, more nature-friendly states is also essential.

“The shoreline zone is not a passive background or an arbitrarily modifiable real estate strip, but the key system that keeps Balaton alive” – the researchers stated. For residents of Fonyód and surrounding settlements, as well as visitors to Balaton, this development means fewer untouched shoreline sections remain that support the lake’s self-purification and the survival of local wildlife.

The situation is urgent: from the perspective of Balaton’s long-term sustainability, it is crucial that shoreline developments do not build up the natural gates but instead protect existing values. ⚠️
